Medicare for All — is what we need
55 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law. Why? He saw a problem — 56% of seniors lacked health care — and corrected it. In doing so, he set a historic course for America, and achieved an incredible political feat.
Today, impacted by Covid-19, we are at another turning point as millions of Americans are living unemployed, without health insurance. It’s never been more clear that every American should be guaranteed Medicare for All as a human right. Over half of the House Democratic Caucus members are co-sponsors of the Medicare for All bill (H.R. 1384), including every Bay Area representative — except our very own Congresswoman Anna Eshoo.
Here is why — Rep. Anna Eshoo is the #1 recipient of Big Pharma money in the United States Congress. She has sided with Big Pharma’s interests on various pieces of legislation, including ones that increased the prices of prescription medication and life-saving treatments. Why would anyone bankrolled by special interests respond to the needs of those that voted them into office? It’s no surprise that Anna refuses to sponsor Medicare for All — Big Pharma would stop signing her campaign checks.
So my question to you — are you interested in change? Or are you fine with this?
Aren’t we the wealthiest country on Earth? Yet, we see headlines like the one above.
Somehow, 55 years after President Johnson signed Medicare into law, Americans are still having to make the impossible choice between housing, food, and healthcare. Over 500,000 individuals go bankrupt every year due to high medical expenses. 40 percent of Americans are unable to afford health care due to the cost. These are life and death decisions that no one should ever have to make.
We have to take the plunge into a better healthcare program for every American. Medicare for All is the answer to an age-old problem that even as the richest country in the world, we have failed to solve. We need to fix our growing healthcare crisis once and for all. There’s just one thing standing in our way: the stronghold that Special Interest Groups and health insurance PACs have on our current elected officials.
I have been an advocate for Medicare for All my entire life, and will never be swayed by anything but my constituent’s needs. We can no longer choose profits and greed over the lives of sick children. That’s why I am the only Democrat in this race that has taken the bold step to refuse PAC and Special Interest Groups money, choosing instead to rely on people like you and me to fund this campaign.
